“The Outer Darkness” is the author's magnum opus that ties together his arguments for unconditional security and conditional rewards. The biblical phrase “outer darkness” occurs three times in the Gospel of Matthew. If you fail to persevere, you will lose your salvation. This Arminian perspective might be called the forfeitist position. The typical acronym employed for this perspective is PEARS. For the Calvinists, if you are elected, you must persevere in order to go to heaven. If you fail to persevere, this will prove that you were never elected. This perspective could be termed the proveitist position. The way you live reputedly proves whether you are saved. Ultimately, your final salvation is conditioned upon your proving you are saved by the way you live. You must persevere till the end to be saved in the end. The well-known acronym for this perspective is TULIP. The mediating position offered by Cauley, in which unconditional security is defended, has its roots in a historical movement known as the Marrow Controversy. Accordingly, the name chosen by Cauley to represent his approach is Marrowism, which is used for a contemporary expression of the Free Grace Movement. Within the Marrowistic hermeneutic, perseverance is regarded as a means necessary for rewards within heaven rather than for entrance into heaven. The acronym for this perspective is GRAPE. Misthos is the Greek word for “rewards” from which the term misthological is derived. Therefore, from the Marrowistic perspective, perseverance would be considered a misthological issue. The outer darkness is likewise regarded as a misthological (that is, rewards) issue within Cauley’s treatment. Objections to unconditional security in general and to a misthological interpretation of the outer darkness in particular are dealt with in-depth in this two volume work. Volume one spans the first 25 chapters and contains the tables of contents and illustrations (as well as abbreviations and symbols) for the entire two-volume set.

About the Author
Marty Cauley earned his B.S. from Western Carolina University and his M.Div. from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (where he was also a co-recipient of the Advanced Greek Award). He is the son of a retired Southern Baptist pastor who also graduated from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Marty has served as the pastor of Southern Baptist churches himself and is currently employed in the computer industry. He and his wife, Dianne, reside in Sylva, North Carolina. They have two sons, Jeremy and Jonathan (with whom he loves to share his passion for biblical research and memorization). He fondly recalls having memorized the Pastoral Epistles with his sons when they were younger. His sons quoted these epistles in their entirety in the AWANA program at the churches they were then attending. Marty has performed dramatic recitations of the Gospel of Mark (among other passages of Scripture).

A Complete Course of Soteriology, Rewards, and Future Things

Volumes 1 and 2 explain in exhaustive detail the critical distinction between: 1) OBTAINING eternal life as a free gift (not reward) from God on the sole condition of faith alone in the Messiah (Jesus) and 2) the promised eternal REWARDS or RECOMPENSE at the Judgment Seat of Christ which results from the believer's deeds in this life. Cauley clearly distinguishes: 1) eternal salvation by grace alone without any supposed meritorious DEEDS on our part from 2)the eternal results of what we DO in this life. Eternal life is therefore seen as a gift (Greek: doran) by grace alone through faith in Christ, but rewards for our deeds are seen as that which is earned (made possible only by God's grace-given opportunity to obey and serve Him). That is, God graciously offers to save us eternally if we believe in Jesus Christ alone for everlasting life and then graciously allows believers to meritoriously serve Him so that He can graciously dispense rewards in the form of acclamation, honor, an inheritance IN the future Kingdom, and/or an inheritance OF the future Kingdom that will follow Christ's Second Advent.
--- The Outer Darkness into which carnal believers will be relegated is not Hell, but is rather their exclusion from PARTICIPATION in the joyous Marriage Feast (celebration) of the Lamb (i.e., at the "wedding feast" to be held only for the faithful believers soon after the Rapture event of the Church). The celebration will be attended only by worthy believers who have overcome the world by faith and by subsequent steadfast faithfulness.
--- This excellent, astute, and detailed explanation of future rewards puts to rest the Reformed Theology doctrine of the "Perseverance of the Saints" as an necessary condition for validating that a person really has eternal or everlasting life, as promised, when (s)he believes. It also disallows any loss of salvation as seen from the Arminian viewpoint. It shows that God is 1) FAITHFUL to His promise to eternally save those who believe in Christ for eternal life (in that the possession of eternal life cannot be relinquished by failure in the Christian life) as well as 2)FAIR in His judgments of our deeds (2 Cor 5:10). Failure in the Christian life leads to loss of Christ's acclaim, rewards, and an inheritance in the Kingdom of God and of Christ. It is the reason that some believers will justly and fairly be excluded from the celebration of the Marriage Feast into "Outer Darknes" away from the "party lights," so to speak, of that glorious and joyful occasion. Such exclusion will result in severe regret (crying and grinding of teeth, etc.) on the part of believers who ignorantly follow the desires of the flesh in this world.
--- As a result of this distinction, Christians should be motivated by the promise of great and eternal rewards as well as the possibility of loss of such rewards and should, with all gravity, follow the Savior by self-denial and co-suffering with Christ and for His cause so that they might inherit the Kingdom with Him and co-reign with Him in it.
--- Because of Cauley's detail and careful reasoning within this work as well as the wealth of material in it: 1) its value will far exceed the price you pay for the two volumes and 2) its content will give you more information that you would think possible! This refreshingly well-spun fantasy re-creates Heathcliff's three lost years, between the time he fled Yorkshire to seek his fortune to his return to claim Catherine Earnshaw. The events of this time are related in a long-lost letter to Cathy, delivered on the day of her marriage to Edgar Linton, which meddling housekeeper Nelly Dean had kept from her mistress. Haire-Sargeant's inventive story takes liberties with more than Wuthering Heights ; she also invokes Jane Eyre and Pygmalion . amed characters--wild, tempestuous Cathy, who pouts and postures in this version; steely, mousy governess Jane Eyre; a more jovial Mr. Rochester, recast as Heathcliff's savior Mr. Are; and even Charlotte and Emily Bronte themselves pop in and out of the novel, making it seem at times like an overwrought drawing-room comedy. The romance novelist's urge for a happy ending threatens to overwhelm Bronte's original intentions, but a wry final twist prevails. Some Bronte devotees may be appalled at Haire-Sargeant's temerity, but most readers will enjoy this nicely executed tale.

Returning home from Brussels, Charlotte Bronte shares a train compartment with Mr. Lockwood and spends the night reading a letter from Heathcliff to Cathy explaining his absence. Nelly Dean had been charged with delivering the letter, but she chose instead to keep it hidden for 60 years; then she seeks Lockwood's assurance that she had done the right thing. In the letter, Heathcliff describes his experiences as the protege of Mr. Are of Thornfield. While the conclusion belies Emily Bronte's vision of Cathy and Heathcliff, the story is suspenseful and well told. Those familiar with the Brontes' work will be fascinated with Haire-Sargeant's conception; others will find that the story stands on its own. Necessary for Bronte collections and also recommended for fiction collections. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 3/15/92.

Sequelmania strikes again as Haire-Sargeant presumes upon Emily Bront‰'s stark, strange masterpiece, delivering a story that achieves a slight success as a literary pastiche but never becomes a satisfying work of fiction in its own right. The novel commingles the author's invention with elements in both Emily and Charlotte Bront‰'s fictional worlds. The literary sisters themselves appear as characters, interacting with Charles Lockwood, Nelly Dean, Edgar Linton, et al. It all begins with Charlotte sharing a railway compartment with Charles Lockwood, who shows her a long letter from Heathcliff to Catherine Earnshaw recounting his doings in the three years he was absent from Wuthering Heights. This letter was contained in a letter from the Heights' old housekeeper, Nelly Dean, in which she confesses that she intercepted Heathcliff's missive to protect Catherine, and now, on her deathbed, wonders whether she did the right thing. While Mr. Lockwood sleeps, Charlotte reads Heathcliff's letter, an account to Cathy of his flight to Liverpool, where he met up with one Mr. Are; the older gentleman took him as his proteg‚ with the aim of refining him. Heathcliff took instruction well, motivated by his desire to be worthy of his beloved Cathy. A surprise meeting with his rival Edgar Linton at Mr. Are's house ended with an improbable act of vengeance on Heathcliff's part. Mr. Are took Heathcliff abroad with him and there fell in love with a young governess named Jane Eyre; upon returning to England, he was about to marry her when it became known that he had a wife, Bertha, who was insane and confined in the attic of his house. Throw in the occasional italicized stream-of-consciousness rumination by Catherine Earnshaw and you have a veritable peat bog of a novel in which a solid footing is hard to attain. Great fun for any Brontë lover!

I recently came across H: The Story of Heathcliff's Journey Back to Wuthering Heights by Lin Haire-Sargeant. It is a great deal of fun to read if you are a Brontë fan and, what she did was so diabolically clever that I found myself grinning as I read.

Basically she used the tale-within-a-tale technique to describe a train trip that a fictional Charlotte Brontë was taking back from France when an ill-fated love affair ended. On the train she encounters a man who tells her about a trip he is taking to visit an old friend on her death bed. Soon he persuades Miss Brontë to read a series of letters sent him by this lady and the fun begins. Of course using such a construct for a novel is extremely clever because you can cover any gaps in credibility with missing pages to letters or letters to another party or simple human error but this story doesn't really rely on this at all.

All lovers of Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights know the story --- Catherine Earnshaw has become enthralled by Edgar Linton and, while talking with their housekeeper Nellie, complains that while she loves Heathcliff, it would "degrade her" to marry him. Heathcliff overhears this and flees. Some years later Cathy is now married to Edgar and Heathcliff returns --- wealthy and a gentleman (though sort of in the sense that Tony Soprano can act like a gentleman at times) --- but it is too late. Everything goes downhill from there.

Well, Haire-Sargeant picks up the story at the moment Heathcliff flees, ragged, filthy and furious, and finds his way to London where he is discovered outside an insane asylum by the mysterious "Mister Are". Mister Are takes a liking to Heathcliff and invites him back to his home where he sets about the process of making a gentleman of him. The rest of the story is genuinely enjoyable.

What makes it so clever is that any devoted Brontë fan will, in short order, begin to recognize names and places and, grinning madly as you read, say "Ahhhhhh, `Are' for Rochester!" The magnanimous Mister Are lives in Thornfield Hall and has a dog named Pilot and pretty soon Mrs. Fairfax shows up followed by Blanche Inghram. So now Emily Brontë's story has merged with her sister, Charlotte's story Jane Eyre. Great fun! As the story progresses there are a lot of things that are perhaps wild and improbable but then both stories are wild and improbable so who cares. My favorite part was once Rochester hired the "governess" that he falls in love with and she and Heathcliff do NOT get along. Frankly, the only two people who ever got along with Heathcliff were Cathy and now Mister Are.

The book is beautifully written and as engrossing as its inspirations. Anyway, I loved the book because, having read both of the books from which it grew many times, it was like spending a weekend with old friends and discovering all kinds of astonishing new things about them! --- from ParlezMoiBlog.com

I loved this book and thought that it was very well done.

I have not read Wuthering Heights or Jane Eyre recently, but I have read both of them, probably multiple times, in the past. While The Story of Heathcliff's Journey Back to Wuthering Heights is not perfect and could have stayed somewhat closer to the Brontes' novels; it was nonetheless very well done, very well done indeed. I thoroughly enjoyed it, despite the occasional discrepancies and liberties taken.

I would have loved it more if it was an original story.

Did you ever wonder how Heathcliff made his fortune? Where he went for those many years after he heard those life-changing words uttered from Cathy, "It would degrade me to marry Heathcliff." You can imagine how that stayed with him and motivated him into some kind of action. But what was it that he did? How did it all happen?

Author Lin Haire-Sergeant makes a bold attempt to fill in that space and explain Heathcliff's life during that time. What I did like about this book is that the story is told by two narrators (which is very similar to Wuthering Heights!) Mr. Lockwood is traveling on a train on his way back to Gimmerton to see Nelly Dean who is on her death bed (this book takes place 20 years after the end of WH). His fellow passenger on the train is none other then Charlotte Bronte! Mr. Lockwood shows her a letter that Nelly Dean sent him and asks her to read it and advise him. The letter is written from Heathcliff to Cathy upon his return to WH and in it he explains what has happened to him and were he has gone. This takes up majority of the book, and Heathcliff is our narrator. Unfortunately, the letter is never delivered and if it was we can imagine that the course of WH would have been very different!

What I didn't like about this book was that the author used the plot and characters from another story to create Heathcliff's path. At first it was fun to discover the similarities and spot the parallels in the story, but by the end I wished that the author would have created her own back story and give us tale that wasn't borrowed. If this was done, then this book would become one of my favorites! I would have liked more creativity and imagination from the author, she has an excellent writing style and I loved her portrayal of Heathcliff. She showed how Cathy was always on his mind, always motivating his actions.

I recommend this book to any Wuthering Heights or Bronte fan. But I would advise you not to have high expectations. While you may enjoy Heathcliff's story you may walk away feeling as I did that it would have been better if she did not borrow it from another book. OR you may like the connections she made between the two books and not mind it being borrowed.

An award-winning, Hall-of-Fame bowler, he has combined years of bowling/coaching experience, scientific training (BS, Penn State, 1975), and a healthy dose of "common sense" to create this instructional manual. The Essentials of Bowling reflects his philosophy that becoming a respectable bowler requires the development of simple, basic skills. Since there is nothing "natural" about bowling, those skills must be borrowed from other aspects of life, then adapted, refined, and applied to our favorite sport. When asked," Why did you write this book?" his reply is: "Because I couldn't find it in any book store. Bowling is as much a mental game as it is physical and nobody is teaching that. I just thought that someone should."

A book that suggest the author spent a long time studying how to present the information. Saves reader the need to sort through a lot of details to understand message. Clear, to the point. If this doesn't help a bowler gain consistency not sure anything will.

Excellent read

I'm a "beginning bowler" as I haven't bowled in 50 yrs. This book is concise only being 70 pages of and covers the "meat" of the meal in a very understandable way. Has good basic drawings to further explain the techniques . I would recommend for all levels with possible exception of professionals.

It addresses these issues in plain language – not coded in specialized jargon – and addresses a multi-disciplinary forum of scholars and students of literacy, narrative and culture.

About the Author

Jens Brockmeier teaches at the Free University of Berlin. Since 1995 he has also been a Visiting Professor at the University of Toronto/OISE. He has published in the fields of psychology, philosophy, linguistics, and the history of culture.

Min Wang has a post-doctoral fellowship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada to work at the Learning Research and Development Center of the University of Pittsburgh.

David R. Olson is University Professor at the University of Toronto/OISE. He is past-president of the Canadian Psychological Association and was co-director of the McLuhan Program in Culture and Technology at the University of Toronto. His research on cognition, language development, and literacy has resulted in numerous books.

The perfect companion guide to the voice

In college, the gentleman I studied voice with was one of Reid's students. He mentioned three books that were to become my vocal bibles: Voice: Psyche and Soma, Bell Canto, and The Free Voice. From the moment I purchased these books, my whole outlook on singing changed--and for the better. Suddenly, everything fell into place for me. I finally understood why people like Pavarotti were in a small select group of singers; they didn't learn to sing overnight by pushing their voices through pieces they couldn't handle.
The Free Voice isn't going to teach you how to sing, but it will help you understand how the voice works. I would suggest if you are searching for a voice teacher, you read this book first and then 'audition' teachers based on what this book has to say. If the teacher is against the theories and methods of this book, they obviously don't know what they are doing and you should move on.
All of the knowledge contained in this book was written by a man who never made it to the sixth grade and who doesn't sing (I got this info from his student, my teacher). Reid is a genius.
