Its stance is rigorously descriptive, but the object of its description is the standard variety of the language, thus making it an invaluable resource compatible with a wide range of purposes, including educated engagement with the language issues that periodically convulse the media and educational institutions. Each chapter contains a glossary of terms, a list of readings, and numerous exercises (many using authentic texts). GERALD P. DELAHUNTY is Associate Professor of Linguistics and English and Assistant Chair of the Colorado State University Department of English, where he teaches courses on all aspects of linguistics and occasional courses on Irish literature. He has published on syntactic theory, English syntax, sociolinguistics, and Irish archaeology. JAMES J. GARVEY taught linguistics and literature courses in the Department of English at Colorado State University. He died tragically in 2006.

About the Author
Kathleen M. Galotti holds a B.A. in psychology and economics from Wellesley College, as well as an M.A. and a Ph.D. in psychology and an M.S.E. in computer and information sciences from the University of Pennsylvania. At Carleton College she holds the title Professor of Cognitive Science, and serves as the director of that interdisciplinary program, which she helped establish in 1989. She also is a former department chair of Psychology. She teaches courses in cognitive and developmental psychology and cognitive science, and has also taught courses in statistics and introductory psychology. Dr. Galotti is the author or coauthor of dozens of studies in cognitive and developmental psychology. Her research centers on the development of reasoning and decision-making skills from the preschool period through adulthood and on the styles with which adolescents and adults plan for the future, make important life commitments, and learn new information. Her research has been funded through the National Science Foundation, the Spencer Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health. She is the author of Making Decisions That Matter: How People Face Important Life Choices (Erlbaum, 2002), as well as a textbook, Cognitive Psychology In and Out of the Laboratory (4th ed) (Cengage, 2008). She has also authored or co-authored dozens of articles in peer-reviewed journals.

loved the mix of fantasy and reality

I was assigned to read "Red Card" for my community college composition course. After reading the descriptions of the other stories, I purchased the ebook because I am a fan of speculative fiction. What I loved the best about each story was the nice blend of sci-fi/fantasy mixed with real characters and situations that could be real. Alarms ended up being my favorite of the stories because like the heroine, Cara, I often wish I had superpowers. I look forward to reading more of Mr.Gilbow's work because each one of these little stories, including the assigned one, were fun reads.

I bought this for the first story, Red Card and really loved the premise although I felt it ended a little weakly its a great idea for a story. The other stories are also good, not great but I think if you enjoy military stories and pirates and heck, good short stories in general you should give this one a try!

Clear, concise but limited

Perhaps few words have been as overused and misunderstood in recent times as postmodernism. This book presents a lively, wide-ranging and highly readable exploration of what postmodernism has come to mean in the context of contemporary art.
The postmodern revolution replaced the Modernist faith in universality, authenticity and artistic progress with a world view that turned artworks into texts, history into mythology, the artist into a fictional character, and reality into an outmoded convention. Eleanor Heartley aptly examines the key developments in the history of postmodern art. It includes a discussion of Neo-Expressionism, the "anti-aesthetic" movement, the art of commodity critique, postmodern feminism, and postmodern multiculturalism. In the process she touches on a number of intriguing questions, namely: "What is art without an artist?"; "Why is photography regarded as the quintessential postmodern medium?"; "How did a movement grounded in denunciations of the commodification of art generate one of the most heated art markets in recent history?"...
Postmodernism is well illustrated, mostly with artworks from the Tate Gallery (the general editor is Simon Wilson, a curator at Tate), although not exclusively so. Excellent selections of David Salle, Lorna Simpson, Adrian Piper, Carl Pope, Barbara Kruger, Julian Schnabel, James Rosenquist, Robert Longo, Jeff Koons, Gerhard RIchter, Mary Kelley, Robert Mapplethorpe, Jorg Immendorff, Eric Fischl, Sandro Chia, and Christopher Le Brun.
It should be noted that aside from Cindy Sherman and Krysztof Wodiczko performance art is scarcely treated. Furthermore architecture, from whence postmodernism receives its name and mixed media art which it has increasingly tended towards are absent save for an aside on Philip Johnson's AT&T building. All in all however a fun and accessible introduction that clarifies and sets the stage for more in-depth inquiries into the phenomena of postmodernism.

easy to understand

this book makes the idea of post-modernism very clear. it's a very complicated subject so i feel this book does a good job at making sense. it was assigned for my class called "Art Criticism of the Post-Modern World." My professor is very smart and experienced and recommended this book because he felt it was the best one to explain the idea.

Unabashed perfection for girls who love pretty princesses and flighty fairies

Second star to the right and straight on till morning is Never Land, a magical world where children never grow up, mermaids sing their songs in crystal clear waters, and winged people fill the skies. These people, known as Never Fairies and Sparrow Men, reside in Pixie Hollow, the secret heart of Never Land. Governing her people with wise words and a benevolent touch is the beautiful Queen Clarion, wearer of the mystic Fairy Crown.

Vidia and the Fairy Crown begins with a celebration that soon turns sour after it is discovered that the Fairy Crown has gone missing. Vidia, a moody misfit fairy who has little reverent regard for the queen, makes an idle suggestion that she might try to steal the crown right off the queen's head! Next thing she knows, she is being accused of having in fact been the one to make off with it, and to clear her good name, she decides to find out who is really responsible for the missing piece of royal regalia. Of course, her friend Prilla acts as her loyal investigative sidekick.

The Disney Fairies franchise has been spun off of the world of Peter Pan, but the only instantly recognizable character is Tinker Bell, and in many cases, such as this manga, she plays only a peripheral role. The main character here is Vidia, a complicated, equivocal soul who struggles with a proverbial dark side. Obviously, "dark side" in this case is more along the lines of passing shadow, yet her status as protagonist nevertheless gives Haruhi Kato's charming tale a touch of unexpected moral complexity that should speak to any child who has not always fit in perfectly with her peers.

Though only a single volume embedded in a long--and prolific--Disney tradition, Vidia and the Fairy Crown is remarkably pleasing on its own terms. You do not need to know anything else about Peter Pan or about the Disney Fairies franchise to thoroughly enjoy this manga, since it is structured like a classic whodunit. Vidia consults with a number of Persons--or Never Fairies--of Interest and follows a string of clues straight to the crown. Will she do the right thing and return it to its rightful caretaker, or will she become in truth the disloyal fairy that everyone already assumes she is? Of course, her decision should surprise no one who knows Disney and its signature brand of children's media, but her quandary still represents a nice narrative touch...and good food for thought for the smaller set.

Kato's artwork is pure visual pleasure. She draws in a style that is clean and cute yet not overly saccharine. The details she puts into the character designs are substantial; the relatively large cast of characters all have recognizably different faces and features. The imagination that goes into the backgrounds is equally substantial, not a discordant note struck anywhere, despite the frequent changes of scene. All in all, the work is entirely convincing, both as manga and as Disney cartoons--unabashed perfection for girls who love pretty princesses and flighty fairies. Recommended for readers young and old.

A wonderful adaptation

This isn't a new story, but rather a manga retelling of the Disney fairy book by the same name. The story is extremely faithful to the book with only a few differences in the dialogue, but even if you do own the book, the artwork is more than enough reason to pick the manga up.

The illustrations bring the story to life and doesn't fall into the occasional traps that manga is prone to. All the characters look distinct and individual, and the drawings always felt alive, never flat. There are a couple times when it lapses into cartoonish caricatures, but overall I have no complaints about the art. Instead of just being put out to cash in on the manga craze, the art helps add to the original story.

Finally at the back are a few short 4-panel strips that most manga fans will recognize. They're all very cute and enjoyable. I very much hope that Disney will continue putting these manga versions out.

Wonderful introduction to manga for young ones who love the Disney Fairies

My daughter is not yet old enough to read a book, even a comic book, of this length, but we have a wonderful time reading this one together. There is a tantalizing ad page near the end saying "Coming in 2009!! The Trouble with Tink, art by Haruhi Katou." It's not available on Amazon. Anyone have a supplier?
