Danny Goodman felt that he couldn't trust any of the documentation on Dynamic HTML (DHTML) that he read (too many contradictions), so he wrote this book as a reference for working with his own clients. After testing tags and techniques on multiple releases of the main browsers, Goodman came up with very practical information--some of which you may not find in any other resource.

Goodman assumes a solid foundation, if not expertise, in basic HTML and an understanding of what DHTML is all about. From those assumptions, he presents a meaty, information-dense volume. The first of the book's four sections discusses industry standards and how to apply the basic principles of DHTML. He emphasizes the differences in Web browsers and discusses how to build pages so that they work well in both Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. About the Author

Danny Goodman has been writing about personal computers and consumer electronics since the late 1970s. His Dynamic HTML: The Definitive Reference, now in its third edition, is an O'Reilly bestseller.To keep up to date on the needs of web developers for his recent books, Danny is also a programming consultant to some of the industry's top intranet development groups and corporations. Danny was born in Chicago, Illinois during the Truman Administration. He earned a B.A. and M.A. in Classical Antiquity from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. I've purchased several books (Javascript: the Definitive Guide, Netscape ONE Developers Guide, etc) relating to Javascript and Web development. I recently became interested in the functionality that DHTML provides and although I have several books on Javascript, I had nothing which directly references DHTML techniques. This is the book if you want to learn BOTH Javascript AND DHTML - the two are linked inextricably as you'll find if you purchase this book.
On the cover, you'll see in smallish lettering "A Comprehensive Resource for HTML, CSS, DOM & JavaScript" - they're not kidding.
Section one contains Applying Dynamic HTML information and covers everything from cross-platform techniques to actual scripting of dynamic events on your webpages.
Section two contains all the reference sections - HTML, Document Objects, Style Sheet Attributes, and a Javascript Core Language reference. This provides everything from supporting browser versions to reference examples, properties and methods for each element - it is exhaustive.
Section three provides cross references so you can find objects or HTML attributes and what elements support them. Ever want to know exactly which objects support the ONCLICK event handler? - here's where you'd go...
Even the 4 appendixes are useful and include a table of color names and RGB values, HTML character entities (special characters), a listing of keyboard events and their character values (useful for initiating code when specific keys are pressed), and finally a reference area for Internet Explorer commands not specifically covered by the document object model.
This is a must buy book for any HTML developer out there - even if you're not at the DHTML level yet.

Great manual on portable modern HTML

While this book may be a bit intimidating for first-time web authors, it is an incredibly useful manual for those who know the basics of HTML and need a reference to newer features and standards.
The first section is an extremely well-written overview of modern HTML: the history and philosophies behind CSS, javascript, the Document Object Model, and the designs of the two major browsers, as well as some excellent examples of writing portable code to access these features from different platforms and browsers. The clarity of the writing here is a very pleasant surprise from what is really just a reference manual and simply doesn't need to be this good. This section alone is probably enough to bring most "tag-only" authors up to date on the newer dynamic technologies.
It is the reference sections, however, for which most readers will buy this book, and they are excellent. There are comprehensive listings of HTML tags (including rendering behavior as well as scriptable attributes), javascript primitives, and DOM structures. Most importantly, every entry in the reference section is labelled very clearly with which browser and/or standards versions support it, a crucial piece of information to cross-platform authors which is left out of many similar books.
All in all, this book may be the only reference a developer really needs on his bookshelf for writing dynamic HTML. The only major complaint I have is that the author is (understandably) very script-centric, and never sufficiently discusses the down side of using heavily scripted pages when static pages or server-side scripts may suffice.

Every Web Author Should Have One!

As a "reference" book (that is, not a tutorial or manual or *dummies* book) is meant to be used by people already familiar with what they are doing and need a comprehensive source to look something up, this book is the perfect model of a great reference work and belongs on every web deleloper's desk. It offers detailed info on HTML elements, DOM, CSS, and JavaScript. As this is a DHTML reference, the Javascript section is sorely lacking, though. A great feature is that for each element, property and attribute, it tells you which versions of Netscape and IE supports that element. Descriptions and examples are also provided for each entry. It also briefly explains how to use DHTML and cross-platform problems. Another consideration is that since this is such a large reference, it takes a little time to get used to its organization and how to look things up. But this is the one web book I keep referring back to all the time.

A Niche Book

If you are a professional, or looking to become a professional, grip or set electrician then this book is invaluable. Unlike set lighting books, there is not a step-by-step guide for configurations from A-Z, just a simple explanation for the names, safe assembly and use of each piece of gear. Unlike lighting, where there is 1 way of doing things or you risk serious injury, in gripping there are hundreds of ways of completing a task through combining pieces of equipment in a creative and custom way based on each problem. This is why there are no step-by-step guides. That would mean there would be no need for grips!

As a grip working my way up the experience ladder this was an enormous help. 50% of the gear in this book I've never even used, but knowing now that it's available, what it's designed for and how complex it is to deploy, has helped me see a whole new avenue of options that I can offer my superiors that will make for more informed conversations.

Even if you don't have any interest in gripping, but just want to expand your knowledge of what's available to help you achieve your target cleverly and above all safely, then give it a read, focus and it should pay dividends.

My thanks to Mr. Uva. You've already upped my game on set.

Finally to anyone thinking that all the gear in here is too expensive or specialized to use on a low/no budget project- most grip and rigging gear is extremely inexpensive to rent. It's usually just a clever bunch of welded steel, clamps and baby/junior pins. All of it designed to make your production run more smoothly and safely. So just have a read of the book with the specific problems you need solved in mind and I'm certain you'll find a good solution that will work better than a ramshackle approach.

Mainly for video production, but can be of use to photographers too

I am probably not the best person to review this book because I bought it confused thinking that it was about using grip equipment creatively for photography and video production. I was thinking that it was, more or less, something in the line of Manfrotto's DYI pdf.

What I found is an encyclopedia of equipment made for grips. Yes you read it right, GRIP is a job title in movie production. Grips are the individuals that build the cinematic stage, setup lighting and shooting platforms used in movie production. I was not aware that term was used to describe a position in the work crew of movie production until I bought this book.

That being said the book covers an impressive collection of equipment ranging from bolts and brackets to cranes and platforms reaching 20 feet high in the air. As I go through the book, I sense it covers two areas. The first area includes Introduction, first chapter (Big Break), seventeenth (General Tricks of the Trade) and eightieth (The Rental House) chapters. All of those chapters describe the job of a grip and provide advice on how to be one and how to deal with employers and vendors.

The second area includes all other chapters starting from chapter two (Essential equipments) and ending with chapter 19 (Field Operation). Within those chapters you will find detailed description of every imaginable grip tool including minibooms, fluid heads, butterflies, lifts, filters, expendables such as dulling spray, and much more. The descriptions along with reference for associated accessories are usually detailed and through. Some tools were left with very short descriptions. Such descriptions are only useful to identify the item, not much more.

The book does not explain when to use grip tools. Rather, the author focuses on providing a complete description of what such tools are used for and in some cases how to technically operate them. Hence, this book is not a "how to" type of book, it's mainly a reference.

Tells what grip is, not how to do it.

I bought this book trying to learn how to properly construct and tie a overhead (butterfly) to an overhead frame. Although this book had lots of interesting information on various grip specific tools and devices, it for the most part, tells what those items are, but not how to use them properly. If you are looking for step by step instructions on common grip tasks, you will not find those instructions here. If you want a synopsis of the studio world of grip gear this is a decent book. However, the closest section section of this book I found to instructions was the professional tips part. However, the professional tips are not well organized (almost random) brief statements of disjointed and out of context advice such as, "A stand pin extension pin can work in place of a short rod (normal pins)." and, "Always put a minimum of four (4) ropes on a 12 ft x 12 ft butterfly or larger frame. One rope on each corner to tie it off on each corner when its positioned overhead (horizontal) in place. Two ropes are used on the top corners when in the vertical position." I find the tip about the ropes on the frames interesting, but by no means did it tell me how to rig a frame start to finish, such as to what are the other ends of the ropes tied to? Stakes in the ground, weights? How does one tie the silk (or other material) to the frame, etc??

About the Author
Born in Tokyo, Japan on May 9, 1928, Goro Sakata was awarded shodan in 1956 and 8-dan in 1979. He has served as editor-in-chief from 1960 to 1970 of the magazine “Renju Sekai” (Renju World) issued by the Nihon Renjusha. A specialist in composing Renju problems (Tsume Renju), some of his best problems are well known to Japanese Renju players. He has published several books on Renju in Japanese, including “A Guide to Renju”, “A Guide to Renju Illustrated”, “How to Win at Renju”, “The Sure Win Theory of Renju”, “Gomoku and Quizzes”, and several others.

This book is a big disappointment

Seeking straightforward engineering projects for an after-school STEM club, I bought this book. Most of the activities require costly equipment and materials. (One activity required wooden baseball bats, which are quite expensive ) The biggest problem is that it doesn't contain straightforward instructions that the students can follow. If you buy this book, you will have to develop your own student instructions. Lastly, there are few, if any, diagrams on how to construct the projects. If you're looking for STEM projects, you'd be better off looking online.

This was a great book for someone who needs to learn about cooperative learning for the first time. It breaks everything down and gives you a basic overview of the why's and how's of implementing. As a teacher who already had the basics I was disappointed in the book because I was hoping for some new adaptations and felt it was low on actual examples and strategies to do with my students.

Needed this book for one of my classes - It was very helpful and helped me get through the class - It is a lot of reading though, so prepare yourself. However in int end you walk away with more knowledge than you did in the beginning so that is always good :)

The book is in great shape (even though it says it is in good condition). The order took about 3-4 days to get her and is almost new. All of the pages in the book are intact, only the cover had a small folding mark, but that is about it. The rest of the book is in an awesome condition. I definitely plan on buying more things from this people. I recommend this book to people who are interested in finding themselves as an individual and are interested in personal growth/development. Buying it here costs you a lot less, because normally this book would cost at around 100 to 120 dollars.

I chose Pride and Prejudice because it is one of Jane Austen's most famous novels. While I was reading it I soon discovered that marriage is the main theme of the novel. I want to compare the different kinds of marriages described in the novel putting emphasis on the marriage of the hero-ine and the hero. I want to show the importance of marriage in women's eyes in the 18th century. In a further step I will take a closer look at the ending of the novel which has often been described as a fairytale ending on the one hand and as confirmation of patriarchal structures on the other. I want to show that the ending can be interpreted in a different way. I shall reveal that marriage in Pride and Prejudice is not only the essence romantic novels are made of but rather important to the existence of women in the 18th century.
