About the Author
Patrick Luyten, PhD, is Associate Professor in the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, University of Leuven; Reader in the Research Department of Clinical, Educational, and Health Psychology, University College London; and Visiting Professor at the Yale Child Study Center. His research focuses on the role of personality, stress, and interpersonal processes in depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia. He is also currently involved in studies on mentalization-based treatment of patients with borderline personality disorder. Dr. Luyten serves on the editorial boards of several scientific journals and is a recipient of the Psychoanalytic Research Exceptional Contribution Award from the International Psychoanalytical Association. He also maintains a private practice.

Linda C. Mayes, MD, is the Arnold Gesell Professor of Child Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and Psychology in the Yale Child Study Center and Special Advisor to the Dean, Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Mayes’s research integrates perspectives from child development, behavioral neuroscience, psychophysiology and neurobiology, developmental psychopathology, and neurobehavioral teratology. Her work focuses on stress-response and regulatory mechanisms in young children at both biological and psychosocial risk. She also focuses on how adults transition to parenthood and the basic neural circuitry of early parent-infant attachment. She and her colleagues have developed a series of interventions for parents, including Minding the Baby, an intensive home-based program, and Discover Together, a program to enhance community and family resilience.

Peter Fonagy, OBE, FMedSci, FBA, PhD, is Freud Memorial Professor of Psychoanalysis and Head of the Research Department of Clinical, Educational, and Health Psychology, University College London; Chief Executive of the Anna Freud Centre; Consultant to the Child and Family Program at the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Baylor College of Medicine; and Visiting Professor at Yale, Harvard, and Emory Medical Schools. Dr. Fonagy's clinical interests center on early attachment relationships, social cognition, borderline personality disorder, and violence. With collaborators in the United Kingdom and United States, he co-developed an innovative research-based dynamic therapeutic approach, mentalization-based treatment. He has published more than 400 scientific papers, 250 chapters, and 17 books.

Mary Target, MSc, PhD, is Professor of Psychoanalysis in the Research Department of Clinical, Educational, and Health Psychology, University College London; Clinical Professor at Yale Medical School; and Visiting Professor at the University of Vienna. She has held several leadership positions in psychology and psychoanalytic organizations. She has a half-time psychoanalytic practice, with clinical interests in early attachment relationships, personality disorders, and disturbances of adult attachment and social cognition. Dr. Target's research interests include child and adult attachment and mentalization, treatment outcomes in children and adolescents, and the development and evaluation of models of psychotherapy. She has published more than 100 scientific papers and 11 books in collaboration, many with Peter Fonagy.

Sidney J. Blatt, PhD, until his death in 2014, was Professor Emeritus in the Departments of Psychiatry and Psychology at Yale University. He was a Life Member of the Western New England Institute for Psychoanalysis. Dr. Blatt published extensively in a wide range of journals in psychology, psychiatry, and psychoanalysis, and authored several books. He was a recipient of the Mary S. Sigourney Foundation Award for distinguished contributions to psychoanalysis, among other honors.

Benjamin Fiske presents a collection of poems that range from the thought provoking, to the haunting. Its obvious that the writer has experienced the greatest highs of love as well as the despair of heartbreak. While the poems in general seem to be extremely personal as taken directly out of the writers own personal journal, they are none the less relatable. I thoroughly enjoyed this collection and look forward to more from Mr. Fiske.

Simply Touching

Poems in this are on a personal level. Some are deeply touching and sad. Some though are open ended which makes you wonder what happened in the end but that's if you want a story and this are poems it's suppose to disturb your emotions. That saying, I think some of the poems here could be made into short stories. It already has that depth into it that could be made into one. Among all else, the poems are simply touching.

Misleading

After reading through this book I feel completely mislead. This book is actually more about something perhaps better called a mind activated robot. This book shows you how to hook up a neurosky mindwave eeg interface and hook it up to a line reading robot, the only thing the thinking portion does is essentially make the robot move forward, all other steering is handled by line reading, and the actual control interface is really a 2 line of code loop saying forward and then turn at the line if any brain activity is happening. When I see the words mind controlled robot, I want something that shows me how to build a robot that goes where I think it should go; forward, back, turn, circles, figure 8s and around the couch and the kitchen table with me steering it by thought.

This should have been a book focused only on EEG sensors!

The title and the first 3 pages feel like a 5-star: they tell you about the EEG sensor with a NeuroSky's MindWave. Later on, they describe the sensor's interface and tell you how to "Measure Your Brains with MindWave". That's very cool and interesting stuff, we all agree.

However, most of the book is about building a robot with Arduino. I love Arduino and robot sensors, but it becomes a bit misleading in this context. I was interested way more in the EEG sensor alone, the robot was just an accessory and the authors tried to look too much for "sensational" stuff.

Demonstrates the power of the Arduino community

The Arduino open-source development has swept the hobbist/Maker market. Its combination of a fairly powerful microcontroller, a good integrated development enviorment, an easy-to--use program language and a host of third-party and open source add-ons and projects. Makes it a natural starting point for anyone experimenting with robotics, automation and control.

This book shows how to use Arduino to build a robot controlled by brainwaves, thanks to a one such add-on kit. The robot is simple enough to be a beginner's project and the book is complete enough to take you through the steps, including the program needed to make the thing run.

This ain't Robbie The Robot from Forbidden Planet. The robot and its associated control system are both pretty crude and its capabilities are limited. But by the same token it's an easy project to build and seves as a great introduction to both robotics and the Arduino system.

Best of all, the Arduino is open source and extensible. If you want to add on to your project later, you have what you need at your fingertips.

For a bright 12-year-old (with a little adult participation) on up, this is one of the best ways to get into robotics.

About the Author
During and after college, Lee Matthias worked as a theater projectionist, theater manager, and film programmer; in public relations; and as a literary agent selling to publishers and producers. He has had a number of magazine articles, one novel, and two “movie-length tales” published, with others on the way. While he’s written several screenplays, so far, his screenwriting has only been optioned. Two heads are better than one, so he keeps a skull on his desk for inspiration (and a second opinion). He is married and the father of two daughters.

Write with your audience in mind indeed ...

EDIT: Gee, this has been a tough read in places but if you can get through the first chapters you get a better grip on your "writing mind" still motivated by the heart. 5 stars now.

I am not through reading Lateral Screenwriting. But let me tell you, i got the feeling there is pure gold in this book, if only it were so hard to keep an open mind about it. Be prepared that this is written in the most appalling, scientific language you might ever have encountered: Contrived sentences, high brow word usage, where a simple language would have done the job much better and much to complicated built up of arguments, instead of making statements, then explaining them. This is a tiring, tiring read and that's coming from me, who studied cultural sciences at universty, mind you. I can remember having written in a similar style like the author her and my professors hated me for it. And right they were!

Now about the content. This author knows his stuff for sure and there are new approaches here to learn. You can call it "lateral" or whatever you like, this is a book on "originality" and how to achieve it, how to be original. And even despite the language, despite only being so early in the book, i learned some very interesting possible approaches to "story", i am sure, there are more to come, once i am through with it.

For readers, i suggest, get yourself liters of coffee to go through this.
For the writer, i suggest, get yourself another editor, preferably a writer of highly emotional action thrillers. Your book lacks pace and smash cuts. Or simply. Write a another edition of the book entirely, that is less scientific and let this scientific one stand on its own.

Nevertheless: Highly recommended, if you have the patience.

Walter Ciszek (1904-1984) fue un sacerdote norteamericano de origen polaco, perteneciente a la Compañía
de Jesús. Entró en el noviciado jesuita en 1928, y, siguiendo la petición de Pío IX de que fueran sacerdotes a Rusia después de la Revolución Bolchevique, solicitó ir a este país. En 1934 fue enviado a Roma para estudiar liturgia y teología rusa en el "Russicum", y en 1937 fue ordenado sacerdote por el rito bizantino con el nombre de Vladimir. De allí fue enviado a la misión polaca de Al'Bertin, desde donde entró en Rusia clandestinamente, como relata este libro. Después de su liberación se dedicó a su trabajo sacerdotal y fue profesor en el Centro de Estudios Orientales Juan XXIII de Fordham University.

Great guitar curriculum!

I've been using this series, 3 vol's, for several years now with my younger students in grades 1st to 3rd (sometimes 4th). Vol. 1 helps kids get started playing guitar immediately. Students practice rhythm, chording and note reading in a way that progressively builds on previous knowledge. No prior music training is necessary with this 3 vol. series. By the end of vol. 1 students have mastered notes on the first 3 strings and have learned several stumming patterns as well as the basic chords in the key of G. Great book! Product description incorrect per amazon.

I use this book for small children especially. It is nice because it starts with "one-finger" chords. The students are easily switching chords and playing tunes within the first lesson. I think the introduction to melodic playing in CGM is great if you are teaching using a pick. However, if you are teaching a fingerstyle form of playing, I would avoid that part of the book. The book is designed for teaching pick playing. I happen to prefer to teach fingerstyle from the very beginning.

As far as the product description, amazon states the book comes with a DVD. It does not. They must have copied and pasted the wrong description. If you expect to receive a DVD with this particular listing, forget it. :)

Cade & Rafe

Redeeming Rafe by Sloane Kennedy (MM/Romance)

So, I started this series backward. LOL. I read Saving Ren first, which I fell in love with, and since Rafe's story was mentioned in Saving Ren, I was curious enough to go back and read book 2.

Book 2 is about how Rafe shows up to disrupt the Barretti's lives. He's the youngest brother and he felt abandoned by his older brothers when they never came for him after their abusive father took off with him. They promised to get him, but they never did. What he didn't realize was that they tried and tried and never gave up. He hacked into their computers, got some incriminating information and planned to "expose" them for revenge. Rafe really suffered when he was with his father. He was abused, raped, prostituted...and so on. I felt for the guy.

Cade, a bodyguard who works for Rafe's siblings security company falls for him. It happened pretty fast actually. I liked Cade. He was tough, rough, but gentle with Rafe. Rafe...I wasn't as connected with him though I was rooting for their Happily Ever After. The plot was simple and didn't get resolved until the end. Someone was gunning for Rafe and we don't know who til the end. The bad guy wasn't even a big part of the story til the end though. It was more of Cade trying to love on Rafe, trying to heal his hurts. I gave this 3 1/2 STARS cause it felt unfinished. Like there should have been more interactions with the bad guy, with Rafe's brothers...but there wasn't.

I'll read more of this author's works in the future though. :)

This is book 2 in the Baretti Security Group series, with book 1 not even being finished yet - the author explains why in her note at the end of this book, and on her website - but reading it this way round absolutely didn't spoil book 1 for me. If you've read Logan's Need, the final book in the Escort series, then you'll know who got rescued in that, and who the rescuer/protector was, and yes, they get their tale in book 1, and they appear as side characters here. The author has said that she'll be making that book a freebie on her website, so based on this tale alone, I know I'll be stalking her website for more info.

Well, back to this book: Rafe is the baby brother of Dom from Logan's Need; the one who got abducted as a child and the reason his brothers formed their agency - so that they could find him. Except that little brother isn't as far away as they think, nor is he as innocent or as helpless than he was when he was taken; in fact, he's a hacker par excellence and he's been giving them trouble - not that they know his identity at this point.

Cade, Logan's bodyguard who'd been a standout character in that book, made me want his tale and I am so, so glad that he was the lead here. He's still the strong and sexy guy from that book, but here we see different sides to him. Initially, he's in charge of surveillance on Rafe (whilst the latter's identity is still unknown), but then Rafe becomes the object of his sexual interest, before Cade falls for him, and finally Cade has to become his protector.

The author wrote the leads very well, and especially so in Rafe's case. There is mention of past sexual abuse that has made him into the man he is today, but it's not graphic or prolonged, though Rafe is still suffering in the tale. She used that trauma to initially break him, then make him into the man he is today, the man who thinks he can count on no-one but himself, but the man who finds himself broken down and then fixed by his love for Cade.

At no point did the author make me feel that the leads' relationship was unbalanced and that one was stronger than the other - I'm talking both sexually and otherwise. They had different strengths, but the same needs, the same feelings, the same loyalty and the same selfless love, and I believed in them and their love, fast-paced as the tale was.

For me, it had the perfect ending, one that I wouldn't have expected from a character as hardened as Rafe was initially, but a very welcome one. I confess to the tiniest disappointment that Logan and Dom aren't quite there themselves, though at the same time, I get why. Still, perhaps that'll be something we get to see in future tales in this series - after all, there's still Ren's tale to come.

I liked that Dom and Logan were in this a bit more than the other characters from previous tales, still as in love and needing each other as ever. It was also nice to hear about/see the past leads, especially with a couple of happy events taking place.

The only thing that took me away from the book a few times and caused me to lower the rating on it, is that the book could do with a touch of proofing, as there were a few errors that took me out of the tale and that a competent proofer - or even a beta - could have picked up on. Not enough to make me think it wasn't still a great read, but just niggly ones that gave me a few 'uwot??' moments.

Update 04/09/15 - I've just finished reading Vin and Mia's tale, which is a freebie on the author's website. It can be read as a standalone, and Logan and Dom feature in it as side characters. It's a great tale that ends in the start of a HEA and I for one want to see more of the leads. I can only hope that SK includes Vin and Mia in future tales and possibly with a wedding...that might just lead to a few more weddings. We also get introduced to Ren Barretti in this book, a guy who's seriously damaged and will need a lot of love, care and healing and learning to live again, before he can get his HEA. I'm now off to beg SK to write quicker!

I was given this book for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

This book begins where book 1 leaves off. You have this connection with the brothers that Kennedy creates and in this book, the connection only becomes stronger.

I really enjoyed Cade in this story. He was a strong, alpha male at times, but during other parts, he was less alpha, but still all male. His relationship with the Barretti brothers is one of loyalty, steadfast love. He respects the brothers a lot and would do anything for them.

Then you have Rafe. He was the brother whom Dom, Ren and Vin thought they lost. Struggling to survive his childhood horrors, Rafe sets out to not only exact revenge on his brothers but on anyone that his brothers consider family. Feeling left behind, vengeful and full of hate, Rafe allows Cade to come close enough to warn his brothers that Rafe is coming for them.

This is an emotional story of forgiveness, love, compassion and grace. Cade and Rafe have hot chemistry and they create a relationship that not only works for them, but that is able to blend in with the other Barretti clan.

So, this broken family with so much pain begins to mend. I can't wait to see what's next!
