Activitatea de ziarist a lui Eminescu a început în vara anului 1876, nevoit să o practice din cauza schimbărilor prilejuite de căderea guvernului conservator. Până atunci el fusese revizor școlar în județele Iași și Vaslui, funcție obținută cu sprijinul ministrului conservator al învățământului, Titu Maiorescu. Imediat după preluarea conducerii ministerului de către liberalul Chițu, Eminescu a fost demis din funcția de revizor școlar și a lucrat ca redactor la Curierul de Iași, publicație aflată atunci în proprietatea unui grup de junimiști. La inițiativa lui Maiorescu și Slavici, Eminescu a fost angajat în octombrie 1877 ca redactor la cotidianul Timpul, organul oficial al conservatorilor, unde a rămas în următorii șase ani.

Deși a ajuns jurnalist printr-un concurs de împrejurări, Eminescu nu a practicat jurnalismul ca pe o meserie oarecare din care să-și câștige pur și simplu existența. Articolele pe care le scria au constituit o ocazie de a face cititorilor educație politică, așa cum își propusese.
„Părerea mea individuală, în care nu oblig pe nimeni de-a crede, e că politica ce se face azi în România și dintr-o parte și dintr-alta e o politică necoaptă, căci pentru adevărata și deplina înțelegere a instituțiilor noastre de azi ne trebuie o generațiune ce-avem de-a o crește de-acu-nainte. Eu las lumea ca să meargă cum îi place dumisale – misiunea oamenilor ce vor din adâncul lor binele țării e creșterea morală a generațiunii tinere și a generațiunii ce va veni. Nu caut adepți la ideea cea întâi, dar la cea de a doua sufletul meu ține ca la el însuși.”

Pentru Eminescu legea supremă în politică era conservarea naționalității și întărirea statului național:
„ … toate dispozițiile câte ating viața juridică și economică a nației trebuie să rezulte înainte de toate din suprema lege a conservării naționalității și a țării, cu orice mijloc și pe orice cale, chiar dacă și mijlocul și calea n-ar fi conforme cu civilizația și umanitarismul care azi formează masca și pretextul sub care apusul se luptă cu toate civilizațiile rămase îndărăt sau eterogene.”

De aceea o politică eficientă putea fi realizată numai ținând seamă „de calitățile și defectele rasei noastre, de predispozițiile ei psihologice”. Prin atitudinea sa, Eminescu nu dorea să constrângă cetățenii de altă etnie să devină români sau să-i excludă din viața publică. Ceea ce își dorea era ca interesul național să fie dominant, nu exclusiv. „Dar ceea ce credem, întemeiați pe vorbele bătrânului Matei Basarab e că țara este, în linia întâia, elemental național și că e scris în cartea veacurilor ca acest element să determine soarta și caracterul acestui stat.”

Publicistica lui Eminescu acoperă perioada Războiului de Independență, a proclamării independenței, a satisfacerii condițiilor impuse de Congresul de la Berlin pentru recunoașterea independenței și proclamarea regatului. Pe lângă aceste mari evenimente politice și sociale el s-a ocupat în articolele sale de toate problemele societății românești din acea vreme: răscumpărarea căilor ferate, noua constituție și legea electorală, bugetul, înființarea Băncii Naționale, dările, inamovibilitatea magistraților, politica externă, etc. Majoritatea articolelor scrise de Eminescu fac parte dintr-o polemică continuă dusă cu ziarele liberale și în principal cu Românul condus de C.A. Rosetti, liberalii aflându-se atunci la guvernare.

Short but powerful information

When we speak to others we forget that our words are just a SMALL FRACTION of what is being communicated. Whether we are speaking to one person or a large audience, the simple yet very effective tools and exercises taught in this book will give you authority and power to communicate effectively. I needed to hear these things. I immediately thought of recent situations I have been in where I know I was perceived as weak, simply from how I was speaking. I plan to work on this. Good and helpful little book to set you straight if you feel inadequate in your conversations with others or if you are preparing to speak to a larger group.

Sufism Debugged

Shams does not mince words. He is also an excellent teacher of exegesis (in his own special way). If he doesn't manage to get under your skin and push off the mask, then it is not for you. My softcover copy has survived a close encounter with a hard surface. Pay special attention then to who is his Master, after you make up. And note that there is a program for your instruction, should you care to follow it. If you don't fall in love with Sham after reading this book, then it is not for you. (And if this review is too cryptic, then it is not for you.)

Here's an extended quote, an entry entitled 'Those who possess the Kernet' (which is followed by the entry "Ali and Muhammad').

Begin quote:

The universe of Truth is an infinitely wide expanse. According to some, it is extremely clear and simple. For some it is very difficult, while according to some it is very easy--yet because of this easiness the remain bewildered. Those who speak about such things, hesitate here.

In the Hadith it has been said, "The Qur'an has seven levels of meaning of both the outer (zahir), the inner (batin), and the inner of the inner." Of these meanings, the scholars know the outer meanings, the saints know the inner meanings, and the prophets know the hidden meanings with the inner meanings, the fourth "none knows but God." So, how can the children of Adam benefit from this? There are many secrets within the hadith as there are in the Qur'an. As God Most High has said, "His heart did not deny what he saw .."[53.11]

They also hesitate to speak about the meaning of the subtle point, "What no eye has seen and no ear has heard."

This book is generously footnoted with highly informative content. A short introduction is followed by the main body of the text: a series of entries, ranging from short snippets to a few pages. It is clearly a labor of love, and a very valuable gift to the English reader. Many thanks to Refik Algan and Camille Adams Helsinki for their efforts. Highly recommended.

An agnostic loves it

At one time I had what I thought was a passing interest in Sufism. I am an agnostic, but as such I think it is my duty to delve into and explore different faiths and spiritual traditions. (Saying you don't know doesn't mean you stop looking) This book made a "passing interest" into complete admiration for a spiritual tradition that is rich, witty, wild, exuberant, frustrating, insane, mystical, and Transcendent. I have heard Sufism called the zen Buddhism of the western tradition. I think that makes sense. But there is something about this book that speaks to me in a way that no other book has. I don't know why. But that's the way it goes.

Good book for Professors and Students

I am a teacher of Introductory Mathematics for Economics. Traditionally, it is not very easy to find good introductory books of Mathematical Economics.

I consider this book to be one of the best. It covers the most important mathematical concepts and techniques such as functions, differentiation, partial differentiation, integration, differential equations, financial mathematics. In all the chapters the reader will find several progress exercises adequate to an introductory level.

The authors clearly show a great deal of concern with the economic applications. This is one of the best aspects of this book: for every mathematical technique explained, the authors present several economic applications.

If you are an undergraduate student of Economics or Business you will find this book extremely useful. If you are a Professor you will discover several interesting examples of mathematical applications to Economic analysis.

It has it's moments

We used this for a class last semester, and I was disappointed. The book is bound poorly, and was falling apart by the end of the semester. Also, I was missing several of the homework problems! There was a table of data for one question, but the questions were not printed in my book. I compared with another student, and his had them. I think 3 of us in the course of 17 had books with this problem. On another chapter, it went from section x.3 to x.5, but the answers for section x.4 matched up with section x.5 in the book. It was really confusing, and my teacher, a grad student, was very apologetic and wished we had used another book. It does have good information and is a good review of a broad range of mathematics, but sometimes I feel like it taught you a, b, and c, and then asked you in the problems for a&q in the same question, when it never covered q at all. It has a lot of potential, but a new corrected edition would be a good idea.

About the Author
Douglas J. Eboch is a professional screenwriter and script doctor who wrote the original screenplay for the movie "Sweet Home Alabama." He has written plays ("Sleepover at the Stable"), video games ("Nightmare Cove"), novels ("Aftermath: Kodiak & Dawn") and a television pilot ("The MOFF Shoppe"). He was awarded the Carl Sautter Screenwriting Award for Best New Voice in feature films. A great new book about the art of the script.

A terrific book for beginners and pros. This book covers aspects of script creation that usually go unexplained, and it does so with clarity and numerous examples. After all, what's the point of learning to write, if your don't know how to choose the right story and develop it properly? It's hard to believe that anyone can come up with a reason for yet another book about screenwriting to exist, but Doug Eboch does it. Buy this book - you won't be sorry.

Exellent framework for evolving to a winning player

This book require a lot of work ,and reflection from the reader.
For those willing to put in the hours, thinking about the many consepts in the book,and how these consepts are tied together,this book will probably be very rewarding. This is not a beginners book per se. Like in his previous book on Omaha, Slotboom puts a lot of emphasis on the different size of your buy in.What is the optimal buy in, related to table position,where you sit in relation to different types of opponents etc. His "simple" approach, on how to avoid difficult decisions on the expensive streets when out of position is brilliant. All in all a very good and thoughtprovoking text on Shorthanded PLO.

Desperately in need of editing

It's clear Rolf understands PLO very well, and comes at it with some unique ideas which have resulted in a lot of success for him. However (and this was true of his first book as well) he has a very difficult time expressing his ideas clearly.

If you read the text, you'll often be faced with very, very long paragraphs that go on and on. It's difficult to absorb because you're literally faced with a giant block of text with all sorts of digressions and side comments. The book really needs to be broken into a lot of smaller chapters, each tightly focused on a single idea. And each chapter needs to be broken into smaller sections, with clear headings, so you know exactly what's being discussed. More whitespace would really help comprehension, too.

Worth reading if you play PLO (especially at non-micro stakes), but it's a bit of work to get value out of it. Also, please be aware that some of his short stack recommendations aren't really useful if you're playing at a low stakes level, because the rake you pay wipes out any gains you might make from dead money in the pot, etc.

Solid methods for PLO

It is not a punishment to read this book. I like the lively style of these writers very much. The method, being presented, is new for PL Omaha, but practical and easy to understand and easy to play. The examples help a lot too. Although this book is written by top-professional poker players, it is still no problem to master the concepts, when you have some basic knowlegde about odds and outs. This book is a "must have" for every serious PL Omaha player! Furthermore, when you want to play for high stakes, you cannot afford to miss reading the high stakes hands from Full Tilt described by Rob Hollink.

A Masterpiece

This is it, the definitive story of surfing, surfers and beach culture.
It's a big thick textbook like collection of information, photos, stories and anecdotes.
Warshaw has set the bar so high with this work, I doubt anyone will ever have the balls to approach the subject again.
I will be reading and re-reading this one for a long time to come

NOT JUST FOR SURFERS

I am not a surfer. But I am a history buff who was given an advance copy of this gorgeous book. I'm only on page 174, but I have to stop and share my excitement about The History of Surfing. How can you not love a book that describes the crowds at surf movies of the late 1950's like this:

"Firecrackers were lit and rolled across the floor to the next row of seats. Bottlecaps zipped through the air. High decibel beer-belches rang out. A motorcyclist might blow in through the side door, ride up one aisle and down the other, then gun back out the way he came.

"What older surfers invariably describe first when talking about early surf movies is the tearing thunderclap of cheers and whistles and stomping feet that began when the lights dimmed and the first blue-green image lip up the screen--a roaring noise signifying not just a manic willingness to be entertained, but the pure joy of an otherwise staunchly nonaligned multitude coming together briefly, powerfully, ecstatically as a group."

Now that's the way to write history. Kevin Starr, California State Historian, eat your heart out.

Great writing

When I got this book I was a bit afraid it would take me forever to read, but as soon as I opened it up and read the first few pages I discovered just how good a writer Matt Warshaw is and how hard it would be to put it down. Matt has gotten the words right using each one with careful consideration and has somehow been able to cover all the bases with an unbiased yet engaging perspective that is different from just reading facts. Reading along and having a slight idea of what was to come made it exciting to see how the bits and pieces of surf history I knew of would be played out in the pages. It was a bit like watching a movie version of a really good book. Most cases you go in expecting a letdown because how can someone match what the book did on the screen, but every once in a while you are surprised. How could someone take the history of surfing and impress in a book? Well somehow this author has. I would recommend it to surfers and non-surfers alike. Great photos, nice job on the page titles, and above all else really great writing.
