About the Author
Dr. Christopher Kendris, an accomplished linguist, has worked as an interpreter and translator for the U.S. State Department at the American Embassy in Paris. He holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and diplomas with " Mention Honorable " at the Universite de Paris (en Sorbonne), and at the Institut de Photetique, Paris. He is former Chairman of the Department of Foreign Languages and Supervisor of 16 foreign language teachers at Farmingdale High School, Farmingdale, NY, and has taught foreign language courses at various colleges and universities.

Dr. Theodore Kendris earned his Ph.D. at Universite Laval, Quebec City. He has taught in the Department of English and Foreign Languages at the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois as well as at the Hazleton Campus of Penn State University. I've owned 501 Spanish Verbs paper edition for years and found it very helpful. When it looked like it was formated for Kindle I bought that one too. It's good but it has some flaws. The complete introductory grammar discussion is easy to read. The "501" verbs are easy to access and easy to read.

But the other two indices have been a problem. In the paper book you can use the English Spanish verb index to look up English verbs, find the equivalent in Spanish and see where the conjugation is. Also you can use the 2,200 verb index to look up Spanish verbs not included in the 501 for a short definition and a similar 501 dictionary entry to help you conjugate it.

In the Kindle edition it's easy to use the Table of Contents to get to the first page of these indices. But to actually use them you would have to page through, page by page, until you found the word you want. There's no way to search for anything except the 501 verbs.

I got around this problem by creating a "Note" at the beginning of each letter in the two indices. When I want to look up an English verb, I "View Notes & Marks" and can page through quickly to the right area.

What the book really needs is two more searchable "dictionaries". I hope that if it's ever developed the upgrade will be available to us, the pioneer users.

Note: I've made my Notes public so you may be able to use them to access these indices with having to enter them yourself.

The Most Important Book For Spanish Students And Teachers

Without a doubt, 501 Spanish Verbs is the most useful book available to a student of the Spanish language. It is not just for students, however. I have heard that even fluent professors have had to consult this book at one time or another because they were confused about how a word was conjugated. Verbs are the backbone of the Spanish language, and if you don't know how to conjugate them, people won't understand you. I take this book with me whenever I go on vacation to Spanish speaking countries, and it has proved infinitely useful during conversations where I didn't know how to say a verb. Spanish speakers are incredibly patient if you don't understand them and need to look something up, and this book is definitely the most helpful.
I should also add one thing: This book unfortunately does not distinguish between verbs commonly used in Spain, and other verbs used in Latin America that mean the same thing. An example is abrasar (to burn or light) and abrazar (to hug). I was telling a Colombian security guard that I was lighting fireworks, and he was confused. Turns out I was saying that I was hugging fireworks. Abrasar is only used in Spain. In Latin America the word for lighting or burning something is Encender. I hope this book helps you as much as it did for me.

It is a "must have" for the serious Spanish student!

I bought my first copy of this book in 1987 and I wore it out! One could not ask for a more complete and comprehensiver verb reference book. It is put together in an easy to follow, comprehensive manner. It begins with a concise explination of each tense (simple and compound) with examples for each. That alone is reason enough to warrant owning this reference. It then goes on to fully conjugate 501 verbs in each tense, with one verb per page, listed alphabetically. So, for example, if you forget the irregular command for of the verb "dar," no problem, just look it up under "d." And there it is along with the verb's meanings, all its conjugations, and examples of idioms commonly associated with this verb. I studied Spanish for ten years and used it all the time. Now I am a Spanish professor, myself, and I still keep it on top of my reference books and reccommend it to all my students.

Very useful Bible study tool in combination with KJV

I have owned one of these since the late 80's, and it has been my favorite "go to" reference both for trying to locate a verse's reference and for trying to figure out to my own satisfaction the exact meaning of difficult passages. That said, I would say that this reference is shrinking in popularity, probably because it is definitely intended for those who are familiar with the KJV.

Young's lists every word in the entire Bible (KJV) in alphabetical order, along with a brief definition of the word, a list of every single verse in the Bible in which that word appears, and a short phrase from each of these verses showing that specific word in context.

When using Young's as a tool for locating a specific Bible passage, the principle is very similar to using Google. Before searching, you try to think of the most relevant and unique word in the passage. Then you look up that word in the concordance. When you have found the word, you read through the short phrases that are listed for each reference, trying to locate the specific verse that you had in mind. Obviously, this is only useful to people who are familiar with KJV passages in the first place, since they must remember enough of the wording to be able to think of a search term and must be able to recognize the phrase when they see it.

To use Young's as a tool for determining the exact meaning of difficult passages, choose a word from a KJV passage that seems most germane or relevant to the meaning of the passage, then look up that word in the Concordance. Let's say the word is "unfruitful." Young's not only lists all of the passages in KJV that use the word "unfruitful," but it also subdivides and groups these references according to the original words (in Greek, Hebrew, Latin, etc.) that were translated into English as "unfruitful." Usually these original words vary slightly in meaning. Young's gives you a brief, objective definition of what each original word denoted. Moreover, you can use Young's to easily find and compare all of the verses containing that same ORIGINAL word (not just every appearance of "unfruitful") so that the exact meaning becomes apparent through the context of how the word is used in various verses.

Why I like it better than Strongs

Most concordances let you trace an English word through the Bible. But, is it really the same word? Is ``infirmity'' astheneo (weakness) or nesos (sickness) in this verse? Both Youngs and Strongs give you the Hebrew or Greek word. However, Youngs gives you all the translations of the ``original'' word, so that you can trace just that word. One English word may actually be several different Hebrew or Greek words. Likewise, one Hebrew or Greek word may actually be translated by several English words. Straighten it all out with Youngs, without having to become a language scholar.

Disappointed

Disappointing. The original short story was cute, it had action and adventure in an alternate world. The short story had conflict with the king not wanting an administrator for a husband and the translator having suffered abuse at the hands of his brothers. While the translator was upset and affected by his past abuse, he did not let it define him and went on a quest to be useful and to prove his own worth, the king came to his rescue and both admitted their attraction and they lived happily ever after. Now the new book. Pros nice world, plenty of back story and additional characters. One of the things Derr does best is world building. Cons additional characters, too many to keep track of, they became distracting. Allen was a wimp, who alternated between bitchy and feeling sorry for himself through most of the book. The king was just an ass until he suddenly decided that he wanted to have sex with Allen. Manufactured drama of the high school kind! While the author usually writes a happily ever after story with some drama/angst this story was too pat and I might have enjoyed it more if I hadn't read the short story. I also agree with another reviewer who mentioned that the real purpose of this book was to open a new world for the following sequels.

Another great fantasy from Megan Derr

The Harken Empire consists of a complex combination of languages and classes, and has been at war in some way or another for far too long. The current High King is the perfect example of this. He’s an ex-soldier whose deceased husband was also a soldier. As often happens with Monarchs, since it’s been years since his husband died, he’s being pushed into marrying again. Enter prince Allen, a silver tongue (translator) who knows more than ten different languages fluently and has been training for the past two years for the position of High Consort, and who is nothing like the soldier partner High King Sarrica wants. Allen and Sarrica are both stubborn and determined, and despite Sarrica snubbing him at their first meeting, Allen is determined to do what he was trained for.

For those of you who may not know, the first version of “the High King’s Golden Tongue” was a short free read written for the Goodreads MM Group’s 2012 Don’t Read in the Closet event, and although I did enjoy the first edition, I felt that there was a lot missing. The new edition doesn’t just fill those holes, it creates a whole new landscape. For one, ‘alternative sexualities’ (such as the LGBTQ rainbow) are taken as being as normal as hetero leanings, and transgender people are accepted as being the gender they feel rather than what they are born as. For example, Sarrica’s first husband was male yet carried their children, and one of Allen’s siblings is asexual (obviously that’s not the term used, though). I must admit, I loved that acceptance, as it is how I feel it should be always. In top of that, the Harken Empire is made up of many different languages with many dialects and the confusions such things cause, yet gender is not taken into account when it comes to careers, lifestyle, or status.

I don’t know if I could say I had a best bit, per se, but I did love the fact that all of the main characters had their own strengths and weaknesses, the teasing between friends and family, and the way each character was affected by their past in different ways. To be honest, I couldn’t put it down, and my sister gave up trying to talk to me until I finished the book because I either didn’t hear her or had to ask her to repeat what she’d said. (I’ve actually trained myself to mostly not do that anymore, since it’s dangerous to be oblivious to what’s happening around you for hours on end.)

I would recommend the second edition of “The High King’s Golden Tongue” for anyone who enjoys reading stories with action, drama, fantasy, wit, or people who persevere despite the odds.

I will admit that I am a fan of Ms Derr’s but even so, I would put this story among the best she has written in the fantasy genre.

Emontionless and Boring

This novel had potential, but none of it was fulfilled. The characters never develop, the storyline is bland and un-engaging, and there is no romance or relationship development.

The world is never explained or detailed enough to make me interested. The most engaging scenes are skipped over entirely to detail the discussion and planning that comes after. The writing is bland and flat and barely fits with the medieval style fantasy world, sometimes using too modern language.

The only redeeming qualities are the characters are unique and the sentence structure and grammar are decent.

Post-Colonial African Politics

This is a very exciting book. It has an excellent introduction which locates postcolonial theory. The intersection between politics and post-colonial theory is the first such application and as Ashcroft suggests on the back cover it is truly ground breaking. The book traces the issues of identity and politics and highlights the major issues which are of concern to African studies, negritude, decolonisation, the state, civil society , human rights and globalisation. Perhaps the most interesting chapter is the chapter on citizenship. I would highly recomend this book. It is not only useful to undergraduates but will be provocative for the more advanced reader.
