About the Author

Omar Santos is a Principal Engineer in the Cisco Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT) part of Cisco’s Security Research and Operations. He mentors and leads engineers and incident managers during the investigation and resolution of security vulnerabilities in all Cisco products. Omar has been working with information technology and cyber security since the mid-1990s. Omar has designed, implemented, and supported numerous secure networks for Fortune 100 and 500 companies and for the U.S. government. Prior to his current role, he was a Technical Leader within the World Wide Security Practice and the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC), where he taught, led, and mentored many engineers within both organizations.

 

Omar is an active member of the security community, where he leads several industrywide initiatives and standard bodies. His active role helps businesses, academic institutions, state and local law enforcement agencies, and other participants that are dedicated to increasing the security of the critical infrastructure.

Are you a network and security professional? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Omar Santos, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that gets you started with managing network security, install and configure network security features to provide additional visibility.

Author Santos, begins by providing an overview of Cisco Netflow and IPFIX. Then, the author covers the different Cisco NetFlow v9 export format and packet details, and includes a detailed comparison between NetFlow and IPFIX. He continues by providing an introduction to Cisco's Flexible NetFlow; as well as, covering the Flexible NetFlow components and fields. Then, the author provides details about the top commercial NetFlow analyzers. He then describes how NetFlow is used for big data analytics for cyber security, along with other network telemetry capabilities, such as firewall logs, syslog, SNMP, and authentication, authorization and accounting logs; in addition to logs from routers and switches, servers, and endpoint stations, among others. Next, the author provides detailed coverage of the Cisco Cyber Threat Defense Solution. He continues by focusing on the different techniques and best practices that are available when troubleshooting NetFlow deployments and configurations. Finally, the author covers several case studies and real life scenarios on how NetFlow is deployed in large enterprises and in small and medium-sized businesses.

MUST HAVE RESOURCE FOR IT ADMINS!

This is a great primer on Flexible NetFlow and IPFIX for those who have minimal experience with either technology! Omar Santos explains with clear language the basics for Cisco's NetFlow and how it relates to the open-standard IPFIX as well as clear examples for usage. I appreciated the way the book took me from a basic overview for the technologies into practical implementations on a variety of platforms, from Cisco IOS, to NX-IOS and even ASA and IOS-XR. This is a resource for every administrator who needs useful tools and understanding for Big Data Analytics including basic CyberSecurity and commonly available tools to collect and analyze the data. Introducing basic troubleshooting for several platforms was a true bonus! While it is not designed to be the ultimate source for everything with analytics, this book is a valuable addition to any administrator's library.

Good Book for Two Great Tools

Imagine getting a book on some topic you love; say a book about “beer”. You relish the idea of reading all about this incredible beverage such as the different types of brew, its history, ingredients used, great breweries around the world, and so forth. Once the book arrives, the entire content is dedicated to one brand of beer and never once talks about how it tastes. Omar Santos pretty much accomplished this same feat with Network Security with Netflow and IPFIX .

First of all Dr. Santos has been quite busy pushing out books for Cisco. He just coauthored a book on security a few months back so he was probably very busy to put full effort into this book on Netflow. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Netwflow, it is probably one of the best network forensic tools ever created. That was the book I was expecting; one filled with all the different ways to use Netflow for forensic investigations and security of network traffic. Network forensic is very different from digital forensics because data is streaming across network devices at high speeds. Digital forensics usually involves locating static data off of evidence sitting right in front of you. They are two completely different fields with network forensics being incredibly advanced compared to the former.

Cisco created Netflow many years ago as a tool to collect data usage information for billing clients, locating bottlenecks, bandwidth scaling and basic tools normally associated with administrative tasks. Somewhere along the line somebody realized that Netflow can track much more useful information that can be used to recreate events, gather evidence of a crime, exonerate someone of a malicious act and help create logs for moving attacks to safer networks.

Netflow works on many devices besides Cisco so it is a tool that is usually installed as the network is created or when a savvy security administrator takes over a network. Basically, it is an essential tool in this line of work. Everyone thinks Wireshark is the bomb but Netflow works at a much higher level of traffic flow for filtering and collecting packets. I have nothing against Wireshark and use it on a regular basis yet Network is much more reasonable when you are dealing with terabytes of traffic per second on multiple connected devices.

Omar Santos does a good job of covering some of the open source tools like export protocols sFlow and Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP). Both tools allow you to collect information about the data that crossed your network both inbound and outbound. As a security professional and a network forensic specialist, you rely on analytical tools to help you sort through all the hay to get to the needle.

As with all Cisco books, this one is very vendor oriented. Netflow is covered in all types of Cisco products ranging from ASA all the way to FireSIGHT Management Control Center. The different configurations are discussed in-depth which is nice if all your products are Cisco. Most organizations have a wide range of vendor products but at least you can use the configuration information as a map to help you understand your network devices. I was pretty impressed with the detailed information presented in the book but it kind of felt like a cheatsheet at certain points.

I love cheatsheets but I want them at the end of the book, not as the main content of a book. Mr. Santos covers a wide range of security uses for Netflow and IPFIX. I was expecting more information focused on the forensic abilities of these two incredible tools. There are multiple ways Omar shows the reader how to use the filtering aspects of these tools to make life easier. As with Wireshark, you gotta filter all that data or else you will lose your mind.

Both GUI and CLI are given equal discussion time in the book. We all know the real strength in any product is in the CLI, using switches and attributes to add power to commands. But we also know that sometimes we want to see what is happening to the thousands of packets we are examining.

Let’s face it: you would not but this book unless you knew the importance of these tools. The book does a great job of covering a wide range of the abilities of the tools. I was just expecting more specific details on network forensics. Because of my own expectations, I was a bit disappointed on the content. Maybe if I were a network guy, I’d be more impressed.

Netflow and IPFIX are two very different tools and have enormous capabilities if you know how to use them. Network Security with Netflow and IPFIX by Omar Santos is a good stab at all this complex information. These are not logging tools. If you are using them as logging tools than you are missing some serious heavy network help. If you want to learn about network forensics, this book is a good place to start.

Clear, Accessible Prose

There is no shortage of single-volume texts on qualitative research, and they all generally serve the task of introducing undergraduates or new graduate students to best practices for various qualitative methodologies. What sets Merriam and Tisdell apart is the clear, accessible prose with which they accomplish the task.

The text is divided into three roughly equal sections on: Research Design, Data Collection, and Data Analysis. Each section is remarkably thorough and solidly cited (without feeling like sausage-packing) with contemporary research. Because of the massive scope of the undertaking, the book has an almost breathless feel to it as it moves rapidly from one concept to the next. In fact, it is the rare text that students will be well-advised to read word-for-word. There are no superfluous comments to skim, and every paragraph introduces a new concept.

With that said, the comprehensive nature of the monograph means that it cannot explore specific methodologies in great depth. Grounded Theory, for instance, received a whole two pages, and the final paragraph (likely added to the fourth edition to reflect recent research) gives a sentence each - with no elaboration - to modern trends in the application of Grounded Theory. Since this is the nature of survey textbooks, it is hard to view this as a fault, but those who acquire the book for independent learning would be well-advised to remember that Merriam and Tisdell provide an overview and introduction of qualitative research, but they would be well-advised to follow the bread crumbs in the References section to move into these subjects more in-depth.

Nonetheless, if you are looking for a book to introduce your students to qualitative research, or if you want a single-volume refresher or reference that covers the breadth of the field, this is an excellent, highly readable choice.

readable, organized introduction to collecting and analyzing qualitative data

This is a well-known, well-regarded introduction to designing, collecting and analyzing qualitative data, distinguished by its reliance on interviews, narratives and coding rather than numerical analysis.

The book, in its 4th edition, is well organized and beautifully written -- accessible and densely informative. Chapters cover those topics necessary for research, including sample selection, data mining, validity and reliability, even writing a research report. An appendix presents one study's methodology section, and the book concludes with a lengthy and updated bibliography as well as name and subject indexes. The latter is very good but not exhaustive.

Overall I like the approach of this book

I enjoyed the introduction to preferences in the types of qualitative research one might perform as a matter of philosophical concern rather than something that is purely technical.

I should first qualify all of this by mentioning that I am not a professional researcher by any means. I am a layperson with no qualifications, aside from a few years of informal qualitative research which I now wish I had documented better.

The layout of this book was a little odd - there is an appendix at the back which outlines the important pieces of a qualitative research study. It references the key chapters you might want to review in order to prepare your study. This seems like it should have been towards the beginning of the book as part of the introduction.

It also claims to be jargon-free, which I would disagree with regarding the first couple of chapters although the ideal audience for this book might have no trouble with the terms). I will mention, though, that the authors did an excellent job of defining most, if not all of the unfamiliar terms they brought up.

The beginning of the book was also more theoretical, which threw me off for "A Guide to Design and Implementation," however, I think this was simply another odd layout choice. Overall, the main portion of the book provides a lot of detail and clear, easy-to-understand examples for all of the main types and methods a beginner or novice qualitative researcher might be interested in.

The summaries at the end of each chapter were a little odd as well - they felt overly and unnecessarily formal given the way the rest of the book was presented.

Overall, this book was a great introduction to qualitative research. My only qualm was that I nearly gave up on it toward the beginning because of the number of unfamiliar terms presented in such a short span of time. I find that it's easier to get used to new terms when there are only one or two at a time. However, I can't honestly think of a way to fix that, as the terms really do seem as though they need to be presented together in order to give the reader the right context for all of them.

A "1st class" compendium about an unique German military unit

Col. Pritchett must have invested a lot of time to get together all this excellent information about a very special German military elite unit. A lot has been published about German WW II divisions, - nothing before like this! You read not only about the early history of the regiment that later grew into a much bigger size but you learn about the uniforms, the insignia, the documents and the awards won by members of the "Grossdeutschland" soldiers. There are original pictures of the time that have never been published next to really nice and detailed pictures of the actual original relicts. - Who likes to read about WW II in Europe should own these books (Vol. 1 and 2). I am very happy to own them, I learnt a lot! I have a good number of publications about German military units of all times on my book shelves, - nothing like this! Looking forward to more publications of Scott Pritchett.

Holy Cow - What a fantastic book

I own a number of books on the subject and this book is unbelievable. First it is a massive book. As big as the Waffenrock book. The pictures are exceptional and clear. Some I have in other books but many I have not seen before. The book includes detailed and very clear photos of uniforms, shoulder boards, decorations and award packets, Wehrpass, Soldbuch, and personal items. The book is well worth every penny and I highly recommend you buy it immediately.

Touching & interesting...

I loved the letter-diary format! I was sorry to see Abby, Jessi, & Mallory drop out of the club. I loved the parts of how Mary Anne is getting on with her life after the fire. I was so touched when she decided to give up going to camp with Abby & Kristy to make sure her parents were all right. It was so good seeing Mary Anne's grandmother again! I hope Verna appears in more future books. I just love her. I love how understanding she was of Mary Anne's sadness over the house fire. Boy, was I annoyed with Logan when he started butting into Mary Anne's business & acting as if she needed special protection! I was glad that Kristy urged her to stand up to Logan. When Mary Anne & her family went back one last time to try to collect what they could from the remains of the farm house, Logan had NO right to invite himself into to what was strictly family business! Mary Anne is one strong, courageous girl who doesn't sugarcoat reality & that's one reason she's my favorite character. I loved the scene where Jessi, Mallory, & Shannon give Mary Anne a photo album & Mary Anne is so touched that she cries. Another moving scene is when Verna gives Mary Anne's family boxes of things that that had belonged to Mary Anne's natural mother & whatever bad feelings Richard & Verna had just melt & they're re-united! I know that made Mary Anne relieved! I like the letters between Stacey & Claudia; those were the funny parts. Claudia's family was intending to "get in touch with nature" by vactioning on a remote island...no TV, computers, or dishwasher. But the results are hilarious! Meanwhile, Stacey & her dad are each dating someone & each of them feel funny about the other's spending so much time with that person. I thought it was realistic that Samantha's thinking of moving in with Stacey's dad. All in all, touching, some sad parts, funny, & uplifting.

EVERYTHING changes!

Baby-sitters Friends Forever is a great series! New things are happening with every single one of the baby-sitters (the author brought the members of the club down to the original four people), and problems that they experience are getting to be more teenage, not just problems with baby-sitting charges. Here's what's happening with ther fantastic four:
Kristy: is worrying big time about what is going to happen with the Baby-sitters Club as they get older and afraid that she and all her friends will drift apart in high school.
Mary Anne: is getting over the fire a little, and thinking about being her own person, not just the person her dad or Logan want her to be. She starts to think that Logan is smothering her.
Claudia: is on a trip to a "deserted" island with her family, and gets back to the simple life and finds that she likes it a lot.
Stacey: is having difficulties with her father- he doesn't like Ethan and thinks that Stacey is seeing too much of him, and he is thinking about moving in with his girlfriend who he has been seeing for a long time. Stacey doesn't like the idea of that.
This is a great book, and seems to focus on the situations that teenagers face when they start to head out of middle school and start to head into high school. A wonderful, realistic book.

Refreshing change for BSC

I've been reading the BSc series for years, and I think that this is a great way to change the series and (hopefully) update it a little. Over time, the books seemed to become too focused on baby-sitting, and the club members didn't seem to do that much outside of that. Now we'll be able to see how they deal with kids their own age and older a little more. And not like in CD, where EVERYTHING turns into a crisis! The only thing I'm really sad about is losing all the other members of the club, expecially Abby and Jessi. We've been reading about them for years, and now to have them just abruptly leave the club is a little to unfair to readers who care about these characters. I hope that we might get a new series about Jessi's ballet school, or that Abby might rejoin in a limited basis later. I also felt like we should have had Jessi and Abby write in this book too, so we could have a better idea of their POV on these big changes in their lives. Can't wait to see what's coming up for everyone in the club. Keep up the good work, Ann Martin!
