DeeDee Cunningham is a holder of professional diamond and gemology diplomas from Great Britain and Canada. Recipient of multiple distinctions, she was awarded the W. Donald Goodger Prize upon graduation from the Canadian Gemological Association in 1995. She lives in Toronto and works with her own company.

The Rumors are True! This Book is a Gem for Reference AND Book Collectibility!

This book is outstanding in every way. All the positive reviews are true. I believe this will become a classic book collector's item and reference work in the gem and jewelry industries... but forget selling it for a profit. You'll want to keep it for a lifetime it's so valuable of a reference work both visually and for its indepth content.
Expensive, I'll concede that, but substantially expensive to produce due to the sheer volume of content (888 pages!) and number of quality photos throughout. So don't expect it to ever get discounted much more than the fifty some dollar price reduction on Amazon as of the fall of 2011 (which is a bargain as I paid the full price shown of $225 when it first hit, yet I still think it was reasonably priced all considered). If it goes even lower grab it, but you might want to consider grabbing it now as the production cost is so high that inflation will make it impractical to reprint in its present pristine form. In that respect the first edition will become a classic collectible I think.

One Of A Kind

No stone is highly revered as the Diamonds. Their brilliance and fancy shapes
have a strong influence on men. Miss Cunningham has delivered a tour de force
on this particular Gem. All the information from the sources to the finish products
are beautifully written.
It is expensive but worth buying because Diamon Compendium is one of a kind.

The Definitive Source

This is a hard cover, heavy tome of nearly 900 pages printed on good quality paper with many pertinent illustrations. It is a very good book crammed with accurate and useful information about diamond, including origin, crystallography, global occurrences, exploration and mining, cutting and polishing, grading and identification. It also discusses simulants and man-made diamonds. It is not written as a story to be read from cover to cover, but as a reference work with a fully descriptive gemmological text to be consulted for its specific topics, some of which are explored in greater scientific depth. The book contains 20 chapters divided into many sections discussing and explaining all aspects of diamonds from physical properties to mining methods and recovery in a plant, including descriptions of techniques, equipment and instruments used in measuring the properties of diamonds. The author took great care in presenting the correct terms for everything discussed. For instance she explains the different meaning of form and habit and why lonsdaleite is not a kind of diamond (type III diamond) but a different mineral. The chapter on colour discusses extensively the perception of colour while other chapters discuss colour enhancement treatments and recutting to enhance brilliance. The chapters on identification of natural diamond, simulants and synthetic diamond are very good. The wide range of topics discussed in this book makes it an eminent textbook and a handbook with practical tips for use in gemmology and in specific diamond courses and it could be considered the `definitive' reference book on diamond.
